Scouts Freezer Camp
During the weekend 23 - 25 February 24 Scouts from Oldham
joined around 260 others at Hesley Wood Campsite in what is known as their
annual "Freezer Camp".
The temperature was well above freezing as it turned out,
however after heavy rain on the Friday night the ground was extremely muddy.
During the weekend the Scouts were able to enjoy a number of
activities including go-carts, climbing wall, mini assault course, archery,
"the cube", and a number of inflatable challenges including a bucking bronco,
darts, and a type of tug of war.
After taking part on the go-carts everyone was completely
splattered in mud and totally unrecognisable, however they all had a smile on
their faces.
On Saturday night they had a traditional camp fire followed by
a DVD then after a good nights sleep they took part in a number of inter group
competitions including football matches and a tug of war.
Scouts District Backwoods Cooking Competition
Scouts from the 4th, 10th and 79th turned up on a bracing morning at the
Denshaw Llama farm.
The morning was spent under instruction showing the scouts how to prepare and
gut fish, cut vegetables and lay them out for cooking, followed by the
preparation of a steward fruit pudding. All this was done with the use of a
sharp knife and tinfoil. The meal was cooked on a fire lit in a hole in the
ground with different depths of fire to attain different temperatures across the
fire. While the food was cooking, plates, tea strainers, cups and various other
gadgets were made.
In the afternoon the scouts split into two groups and prepared the food for
themselves with a few screams as the fish guts fell out and scouts fingers
explored the mouths of the fish!! All the food was prepared to a good standard
then cooked on the embers of the fire. The leaders were chief tasters and all
the food was given the thumbs up.
Well done to all who took part and a special thank you to Helen for the use
of the farm and Mitch Whitehead for expert instruction throughout the day.

County Backwoods cooking Competition
All
the scouts that took part in the district cooking day went to create two teams
for the county competition. Both teams did very well and came joint runners up
to a team from Bolton. They were complimented on their team work and effort as
both teams were 2 members short and made up of scouts from different groups.
Unfortunately there is no Regional final planned for this year.
Well
done to all those who took part.
Scouts 5 a side Football Competition
4
teams representing the 10th, 79th, 115th & 128th played each
other twice in 10 min matches.
A
good contest enjoyed by all was won by the 128th, Hey St. John's.
Thank you to Steve
from Denshaw for refereeing and Bill from St Cuthbert's for time
keeping.
County 5 a side Competition
As a result of winning the Oldham competition, Scouts from the 128th
went along to play in the county competition. Although they played
very well against some big lads they unfortunately did not win but came a
creditable 4th. Well done to everyone who took part.
