Scout Activities in 2001

Incident Hike

Although the Foot and Mouth precautions resulted in the closure of the Dovestones area, our original choice of venue, Scouts from the 12th, 22nd, and 115th were still able to take part in an activity due to some hasty re-planning.

The hike became a much shorter walk though the Scouts still needed to be able to read a map in order to find each of the check points.

There were 6 check points designed to test knowledge, ability, initiative, imagination, and team work. In addition, each check point provided the Scouts with a clue to help them solve a puzzle which they had been given.

Briefly, the challenges were;

1. Follow a series of compass bearings then identify the star constellation they had just completed.
2. Complete a simple "mind bending" puzzle.
3. Tie a reef knot in a length of spaghetti.
4. Apply first aid to an injured cyclist.
5. Devise a method of getting an aerial as high as possible so that a message can be transmitted from a short wave radio.
6. Estimate the length of a bridge over a river.

The final placing's were;

22nd A team

42 points

22nd B team

41 points

115th

41 points

12th

37 points

Well done to everyone who took part.

Gadum Shield

After their success in the District Incident Hike, teams from 22nd and 115th took part in the County Gadum Shield Competition. Again due to the foot and mouth outbreak the venue had to be changed from Tandle Hill Park to the County HQ. In view of the poor weather this proved a blessing as the teams were able to get some shelter whilst completing some of the challenges.

12 Teams took part in the fourteen challenges which had been set up, ranging from cooking a pancake to estimating distances and from first aid to filling a leaking tube with water.

Unfortunately the two Oldham teams did not finish in the first three but everyone had a very enjoyable day.
