Scout Activities in 2000

GMN 2000 Millennium Camp

Scouts from the 22nd, 85th and 115th took part in the Greater Manchester North Home from homeMillennium Camp celebrations held over the weekend 26/29 May 2000.

The ADC (Scouts) in his report to the District AGM summarises the weekend as follows:

"The camp was a real example of why we, as leaders, are involved in Scouting. Yes, it rained heavily, yes, the ground was ankle deep in mud in places (nothing changes), but the buzz coming from the young people on this camp was incredible. I didn't hear one moan from any Beaver, Cub or Scout during the three days of the Jamboree; they A muddy pathwere just too busy. I have never seen such a wide range of activities on offer to the Scouts while on a short camp. Many Scouts I talked to reckoned it was the best camp they had ever been on.

There were two highlights for me during the camp, the first was on Saturday night when all those on site, as part of the nationwide Scout celebration for the new millennium, re-affirmed their Promise whilst a Scout from the 22nd Oldham was invested. This was followed by a parade of light to the meadow where the celebration was concluded by a spectacular firework display. The second highlight was the handing out of the Chief Scout and Queens Scout awards at the closing ceremony, including some to disabled Scouts.

All this demonstrates to me what Scouting is all about, that we as leaders are there to Building a wallhelp young people enjoy themselves whilst aiding them to learn new skills and develop further as a person. Most Scouts, when asked, join because of the activities Scouting is famed for: camping, walking, water based activities and so on. Many leave because the troop doesn't do these activities and so they get bored."

This camp was an excellent example of providing the type of activity young people want to experience.

District Camp

Although only 2 Groups took part in this years district camp, the Scouts had a great time and enjoyed a number of activities including backwoods cooking.

In the photographs the Scouts are being shown how to prepare a nice jucy slice of gammon for cooking on an open fire, whilst the other group is making some cheese flavoured hash browns which are to be cooked in tin foil dishes.
