Cub Scout Badges & Awards

This is the Membership Badge and is awarded when a boy or girl is becomes a member of the Scout Movement.

This Badge is worn on the left chest.

The Joining-in Badge celebrates a Cub Scouts participation in the Programme of activities over a period of time.

These Badges recognise the length of time a young person has been a member of the Scout Movement rather than as member of a particular section and are numbered from 1 through to 9.

The first Badge is presented 12 months after receiving their Membership Badge and annually after a further 12 months.

This Badge is worn on the left chest above the Membership Badge and any Moving-On Awards

There are five Challenge Badges;

  • The Caring Challenge (shown on the left)
  • The Creative Challenge
  • The Fitness Challenge
  • The Global Challenge
  • The Outdoor Challenge

All challenges are flexible and encourage participation rather than reaching a particular standard so that all young people, no matter what their individual skill may be, have a chance to gain an award.

They can complete a Challenge a second time, but on the second time you would expect to see more involvement, skill and development. They can then wear both Badges on their uniform.

This badge is worn on the right chest in line with the Membership Badge.

To gain the Chief Scout's Silver Award, the highest award for a Cub Scout, the Cub will need to complete

  • The Outdoor Challenge
  • Any two other challenges
  • A personal challenge

If the Cub has not quite completed this Award when they move up to the Scout Troop it can be completed before their 11th birthday in the Scout Troop

This badge is worn on the right chest immediately above the Challenge Badges

There is a wide range of Activity Badges which recognise the skills and talents that our young people have, they are;

In addition to the above Activity Badges, there are four Staged Activity Badges, each with five stages, which can be earned by any member in the first four sections, these are;

  • Nights Away (Stage 1 shown on the left)
  • Information Technology
  • Musician
  • Swimmer

With these badges it is the skill of the individual and not their age or section which determines which badge they are to be awarded.

Any badge earned whilst a Cub can be worn on the Scout uniform, then replaced when they are awarded the next stage.

These Badges are worn with other Activity Badges on the left sleeve.

To enable Sections to work together there are three Group Awards, these are;

  • The Environment Award (shown on the left)
  • The International Friendship award
  • The Faith Award

These badges are worn below the County and District Badges and any sixer or second stripes on the right sleeve.

If promoted to being a Sixer in the Pack then the Cub can wear this badge. A second wears a similar badge but with just 1 stripe.

This badge is worn on the right sleeve immediately below the County and District Badges.

When it is time to move up to the Scouts, a Cub can work for their Moving-On Award.

This badge is worn on the left chest immediately above the Membership Badge.
(This badge is earned in Cubs but will usually be seen on their Scout Uniform)

Details of how to gain these badges is shown in the leaders "Pack Essentials" handbook and on Scoutbase
