Cub Activities in 2008

Christmas Carol Service

Around 50 Beavers and Cubs along with a similar number of parents enjoyed a Christmas Carol Service with a difference at Oldham Baptist Church.

Between singing Christmas songs and carols the Rev Rick Preston told the story of the birth of Jesus, however it was done in a most unusual way and with much involvement from the children and parents.

Towards the end of the service Cameron Heap from the 15th was presented with his Chief Scouts Bronze Award. Well done Cameron.

Cubs visit Santa at Wakefield Mining Museum

60 members took part in a district trip to the national coal mining museum in Wakefield. Santa was down one shaft of the mine and all the good boys and girls got a present if they could ring his magic bell. In the afternoon we all went down the shaft to a depth of 460ft to see mining from the 1800s to present day crawling through the coal face and generally having a good time. Sometimes in total darkness when the miners torches were turned off.

Thanks to Helen for her help in organising things with the coal mine.

District Cub Camp

This took place on another very wet weekend and reminded everyone of the District Centenary Camp with mud everywhere.

Around 60 Cubs and their leaders survived a thunder and lightening storm on Friday night, then showers throughout Saturday. Sunday was a little better and everyone left camp saying what a good time they had.

The theme for the camp was pirates and the Cubs took part in various activity bases using this theme.

Although this camp took part just a few days before Paul Riddle (the ADC Cubs) emigrated he still wanted to be a part of it and was able to spend Friday night and Saturday on camp. As it was also his birthday on the Saturday he was presented with a cake and enjoyed a chorus of Happy Birthday.

Mike also visited the camp and was formally presented with gifts to mark his retirement as District Commissioner by Dave Riley, the District Chairman.

Trip to Jodrell Bank & Manchester Airport

On Saturday 26th January 2008 42 Cubs and 17 leaders from 5 Groups visited Jodrell Bank and Manchester Airport to work towards their Air activities and Astronomers badges.

The day started with a coach journey to Jodrell Bank where the Cubs got to see the world famous Telescope and explorer the planets finding out about each of them.

The Cubs learnt the following sentence which helps you to remember the order of the planets. "My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets" becomes
Mercury, Venue, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto.

The visit to jodrell bank finished with a special 3d trip to Mars.

After Jodrell bank we boarded the coach and went to Manchester Airport to find out about the airport.

The cubs learnt that:
-22million people use the airport every year
-It is open 24 hours a day
-The Busiest months are August and September
-The quietest months are January and February
-There are 2 runways each measure 3048 metre's long
