Activity Badge Workshop
The first activity of 2007 for the Cub Scouts was the Activity
Badge Workshop held in the BP Centre. This year the 4 badges on offer were; Chef, DIY, Emergency Aid and Scientist. Just over 108 Cubs from 11 Groups took part in a full day of activities with most of them gaining two of the badges on offer by working on one of them during the morning then trying for a second during the afternoon. Those doing the Chefs badge made Meat & Potato Stew with Carrots, a Banana Split and Jam Tarts. The ones doing DIY made a bird feeder and a key rack. ![]() Others learned vital first aid skills whilst the scientist conducted a number of experiments. Fortunately no one really got injured, although there was one or two sore thumbs amongst the DIY's, and we managed to get through the day without blowing up the District HQ. Having so many Cubs taking part meant that we had around 20 leaders helping out. The total number of badges gained were; 65 DIY, 61 Chef, 45 Scientist and 36 First Aid - a grand total of 204 badges. Our thanks therefore goes to everyone who
helped to make the day a great success.
5 a side Football CompetitionOn Sunday, 13th May 2007 the annual District Cub 5-a-side football competition was held at Oldham Sports Centre. There was a total of 9 teams entered representing 8 groups. Numbers were a little down on previous years however this meant that matches could be extended and the players got more playing time. The day went very well 36 matches were played using a league system. The top 4 teams then had play offs for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th places. The results were:
The 4 teams making it through to the play offs were St Johns Crusaders (St Johns Hey), Delph Donkeys (Delph Methodist), Barnies Belters (St Barnabas) and Crazy Cubs (Waterhead) After a 3rd and 4th place play off between Barnies Belters and Crazy Cubs the result was 1-0 to Crazy Cubs putting them in 3rd place. The 1st and 2nd place play off between St Johns Crusaders and Delph Donkeys was a 0-0 draw after the main match so there was then a golden goal match which was won by St Johns Crusaders. Final result .... Beaver & Cub Christmas ShowInstead of the usual Beaver Carol Service, this year the Beavers and Cubs joined together to put on a Christmas show. Each group performed a short song or play and in between everyone joined in singing Christmas songs and carols. Towards the end of the show Santa came along, but this time the Beavers and Cubs had brought along a present which they wanted Santa to take to the children who would be spending Christmas in Francis House Children's Hospice. Santa thanked everyone and stayed a short while to listen to everyone singing some special camp fire songs. It was very well supported by Beavers, Cubs and their parents and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves very much. Click here to see some photo's taken during the show.
