Cub Activities in 2003

Activity Badge Workshop

Almost 60 Cubs from 8 groups took part in the Activity Badge Workshop held at the BP Centre.

The idea behind the event was to provide expert tuition on some of the badges that some leaders find difficult to teach. Each Cub was given the opportunity to learn about, and practice the requirements of two different badges.

The badges being taught this year were: Cook, DIY, Home Safety, Scientist along with map and compass work towards their Outdoor Challenge Badge.

On the practical side those Cubs learning the Cooks badge made Spaghetti Bolognese and Jam tarts, whilst those doing the Handyman Badge went home with a Bird Feeder and a Key Tidy. The Scientist completed a number of experiments and those doing home safety learned how they could avoid accidents at home. Hopefully the map readers were able to find their way back home after the event.

District Cub Camp

This took place on a glorious weekend when everyone spent lots of time putting on sun cream and sitting in the shade.

Over 90 Cubs from 8 Packs took part in this years camp which was held at Bispham Hall Camp Site, near Wigan.

The camp had a Viking Theme and the Cubs spent lots of time making their costumes and acting out scenes, including sailing across the North Sea in canoes.

During the camp Barry was presented with his long service award and Daniel with his warrant.

Sponsored Fancy Dress Ramble

Over 100 children took part in this years event for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

A number of Groups came dressed to a particular theme. These included the Fitton Hillbillies, Roman Gladiators, American Independence Day (complete with fireworks), but the winners were the 7th Cubs - Bin men and rubbish.

In addition we had lots of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts dressed up to represent various characters. Many were excellent and gave the judges a difficult time choosing the winner, however after much deliberation the prize went to a Cub from 15th representing a character from the Harry Potter stories.

After asking a number of children how much they had been sponsored for it would appear that the Groups collectively have earned in excess of £1000 as the minimum amount sponsored appeared to be £10.

Swimming Gala

Cubs from 7 Packs took part in the joint Cub & Scout Swimming Gala held at Royton Baths.

Although there was a number of close finishes the lane judges did a good job and everyone seemed happy with the placings.

The top three groups were:

First Place - 22nd, St. Anne's, Lydgate
Second Place - 10th, Knolls Lane
Third Place - 15th, Holy Trinity, Waterhead

Congratulations to everyone who took part and especially the Cubs who came from any of the above groups.

5 a side Football Competition

16 teams provided everyone with a good afternoon's entertainment and a thrilling final.

The losing semifinalist came from St. Margaret's and Knolls Lane with Delph and Saddleworth Bulldogs going through to the final.

At the end of full time neither team had been able to score a goal so a further 10 minutes was played whilst the teams tried to score a golden goal. However with no goal scored they had a penalty shoot out which finally saw some very tired players from Saddleworth Bulldogs win 2 - 0.

Here you can see the two finalist, both looking very weary after their long and exhausting final.
