Road Safety Training

Although there was only 35 Cubs from 5 Cub Packs represented at the Road
Safety training day, they had a good time and were taught a valuable lesson
in Road Safety.

Two Road Safety Officers from Oldham Road Safety Unit came along to teach
the Cubs
- how to behave on a busy road,
- how to cross a road safely,
- how to behave whilst a passenger in a car,
- road signs and their meanings,
- how to use a public telephone in an emergency
After learning the theory the Cubs then went out and put into practice
what they had been taught.
District Cub Camp
This years camp took place at Tawd Vale Camp Site which is near to Ormskirk.
The weather was dry and warm with good sunny periods, especially on the
Sunday.
This year's theme was "Pirates" and involved the Cubs in making
pirate flags, hats and badges which they wore along with items brought
from home, at the camp fire later in the day. Also during the afternoon
we used a large blue plastic sheet covered in water to represent the sea
and had a marvellous time sliding and splashing about, before everyone
got their water pistol and had a real water fight.
Some Scouts also came along to help and made a swing from pioneering
poles. This proved very popular and meant we had to limit the time each
Cub spent on the swing.

Swimming Gala
After
a gap of many years a Cub Swimming Gala was held at Royton Swimming Baths
on a gloriously sunny day in May.
Approx 70 Cubs took part in an individual event (e.g. breastroke, backstroke,
or freestyle) split into two age groups with some also taking part in
a relay race.
Points were awarded based on their finishing position and the winners
in each heat went on to the semi final and finals.
Whilst the certificates were being written and the overall winners
established
the Cubs took part in a novelty race. This involved heading a ball down
their own lane and turned out to be much harder than anyone had imagined.
Congratulations to everyone who took part, well done to those who got
a certificate, and a very big congratulations to 22nd Oldham St Annes,
Lydgate who were the overall winners.
5 a side Football.
Once again, over 120 Cubs took part in the annual 5 a side football
competition.
The 24 teams were split into four leagues and each played 5 games before
the four semi-finalist's were determined.
Both semi finals were keenly contested before an appreciative audience.
The results were:
St Thomas "A" - 1 v St Johns "B" - 0
St Edwards "A" - 2 v St Thomas "B" - 0
In the final game play moved quickly from one end to the other, but neither
team was able to score. The match then went into extra time and we all
waited for the golden goal to determine the competition winners.
A player from St Thomas, keen to prevent a goal strayed into the forbidden
goal keepers area and gave St Edwards a scoring opportunity from which
they were able to score the all important golden goal.
The final score was St Thomas "A" - 0 v St Edwards "A"
- 1
Well done to everyone and especially the Cubs from St Edwards.
