Activity Badge Workshop
Over 90 Cub Scouts spent the day hammering, screwing, drawing, sticking,
bandaging, resuscitating and looking at the sky to gain their Handyman,
Artist, First Aider and Astronomer Activity Badges.
Each Cub spent a morning or afternoon at one of the bases. During this
time they were given full instruction on the particular badge they had
chosen. This included making a bird box for the Handyman Badge, fridge
magnets, a poster and a presentation box for the Artist Badge, giving
first aid treatment to a patient for their First Aider Badge and being
able to tell the Plough from Orion and Saturn from Pluto in the Astronomer
Badge.
On successfully completing the requirements of the badge the Cub was
awarded a certificate and will be presented with the appropriate badge
at a suitable Group occasion.
In all, 168 badges were gained during the day.
Cub Trip
Approximately 80 Cubs and Leaders took part in this years trip to The
Sandcastle in Blackpool, followed by a tour of the Illuminations.
The Sandcastle is not made of sand on Blackpool beach, it is actually
an indoor leisure pool with slides, swimming pools, and a wave machine. Once
everyone had got into the water it didn't take the Cubs long before they
all started to attack Big Barry. As always Barry managed to
defend himself admirably making sure that the Cubs got well and truly
WET.
After spending a couple of hours in the water we kept the catering staff
busy by ordering Burgers, Chips and a drink for everyone.
This was followed by an hours free time on the South Pier before getting
back on our coach and driving through the illuminations.
5 a side Football.
Our annual 5 a side competition was held
on Mothering Sunday. Although we had less entries this year
the standard of football was as good as ever with lots of parents present
to cheer on their team The teams were split into two leagues,
with the winners and runners up going forward to the semi-final.
The final was between 7th Oldham, Leesfield and 127th Oldham,
St Thomas, Moorside. The team from Moorside scored
an early goal and were looking certain winners, then with just 5 seconds
left Leesfield equalised. Extra time was then played
and Leesfield scored the all important deciding goal. Congratulations
to everyone who took part and especially to the Cubs from the 7th Oldham.
District Cub Camp.
Approximately 120 Cubs and their leaders took part in the District Cub
Camp at Bradley Wood Camp Site, the theme this year taken from the Naturalist
Activity Badge.
At the Disco on Friday night a number of Cubs and leaders came in fancy
dress, including Big Barry in a wild caterpillar costume.
On Saturday, the Cubs visited various bases based on the activity badge
before trying out the on-site activities, e.g.. archery, air rifles, sledging
and swimming. Before going to the camp fire everyone had their face
painted to make them look like an insect, i.e. a bee, a ladybird, a butterfly
or a spider in its web etc, then they tasted various insect food which
had been carefully prepared. This included worms (spaghetti), frog
spawn (tapioca), slugs (pasta shells) and much more.
On Sunday there was a Cubs Own service before doing more work on the Naturalist
badge.
Everyone had a really enjoyable time and as usual came home exhausted.
