Beaver Conservation DayJust over 50 Beavers took part in this years conservation day which was once again held at Waterhead Parish Hall and in and around Strinesdale Country Park. The Beavers went pond dipping, collected and identified creepy crawlies, planted seeds, made a bee and a flower out of coloured paper, toasted marshmallows on a barbeque as well as taking part on a number of other bases. Everyone had an enjoyable day and took great delight in showing the creepy crawlies they had collected to their mums when they came to collect them. Beaver SleepoverAround 50 Beavers from 5 Groups took part in the sleepover that was arranged by Graham Sinclair at Denshaw Village Hall. On Friday evening they played a number of games, sang some action songs around a camp fire, and completed various craft activities. These included glass painting, made some leather key rings and started to make a key rack, made some finger puppets and did a life size drawing of themselves. The evening finished with hot dogs and cake before settling down to sleep. On Saturday they did a couple of wide games outside the village hall, had an opportunity to try climbing the Bouldering Wall, saw how the Police Dogs are able to find drugs and keep a large crowd under control. They also had their faces painted, made fridge magnets with Hama Beads and painted stones which could be used as paper weights. After lunch they played party games such as pass the parcel and musical chairs. Everyone had a great time and can't wait until the next time. Day Trip to Blackpool ZooOn Saturday 27th October 2007 the Beavers set of on their trip to Blackpool Zoo and although it was only early, by the time we reached Blackpool, some of the Beavers had already eaten their packed lunches on the coach.
70 Beavers and Leaders from 4 colonies enjoyed a wonderful fine day at the zoo. The entrance to the zoo was decorated up ready to celebrate Halloween and caused some excitement amongst the beavers.
On entering he zoo park there was a giant tortoise, the biggest they had ever seen, it was absolutely huge, and there were plenty of others living in the same enclosure. It was then on to the Dinosaur Safari where they experience a journey back in time to meet dinosaurs and giant reptiles and to learn how what really happened to them. The safari also took them under the shadows of a giant erupting volcano, over streams, past spouting water geysers and alongside lakes and waterfall.
Peacocks were wandering all around the park as well as ducks and some birds.
Next it was on to see the noisy sea lions being fed and around the park to see all the other animals. Some had the zoo keeper giving talks or feeding the animals others you could see some indoors others outside enjoying the sunshine. The monkeys were swinging on there ropes the elephants went for a walk around their enclosure, the lions were lazing on the rocks and the tiger was on the prowl. Kangaroos had their babies with them and there were numerous camels, reindeer, meerkats, ostriches, red panda's, river hogs, llama, zebras, gorillas and goats.
There were a vast assortment of birds including pink flamingo's, white flamingo's, pelicans, owls, emu's, toco toucans, cranes and a bird house.
There was the Amazonia area which include lots of creepy crawlies and crocodiles.
The children's zoo corner has mainly domesticated animals which include miniature donkey's, pygmy goat, Indian runner ducks, birds, meerkats, squirrels, dwarf zebu, rabbits, guinea pigs and hens etc.
Towards the end of the day the Beavers went on the play park and then back onto the coaches back to Oldham after an enjoyable day at the zoo.
Beaver Christmas Fun DayOver 70 Beavers from 10 groups began the countdown to Christmas by holding a Christmas Fun Day at the start of December. There was a number of bases, each of which had been given a Christmas name, at which they made a Christmas themed item. These included a calendar, a card with a snow scene, a snowman, an advent calendar full of sweets etc. There was lots of glue, felt pens and enough glitter to ensure everyone had a good time. The event finished with everyone singing a couple of Christmas songs and a visit by Santa who had brought everyone a small present. Click here to see some pictures of everyone having a good time. Beaver & Cub Christmas ShowInstead of the usual Carol Service, this year the Beavers and Cubs joined together to put on a Christmas show. Each group performed a short song or play and in between everyone joined in singing Christmas songs and carols. Towards the end of the show Santa came along, but this time the Beavers and Cubs had brought along a present which they wanted Santa to take to the children who would be spending Christmas in Francis House Children's Hospice. Santa thanked everyone and stayed a short while to listen to everyone singing some special camp fire songs. It was very well supported by Beavers, Cubs and their parents and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves very much. Click here to see some photo's taken during the show.
